Joe makes the best crab cakes. He really does—and I order crab cakes at every single restaurant I go to that has them (unless I anticipate them being full of bread crumbs and deep fried). So I really know about crab cakes.
The first version can be found here.
The Crab Cakes Special Edition is actually not much different than the original, but I added an (undetectable) egg, and to the half of the mixture I wasn’t going to eat I added bread crumbs, which I hear was a wonderful addition.
Crab Cakes
Jumbo lump crab (1 can – I usually buy Boss brand at Wegmans, but I’d like to find one that’s in a BPA free can).
1tsp dry mustard
1/4 cup vegenaise or mayo (we have grapeseed vegenaise out of habit–it’s a texture thing)
black pepper
worcestershire (several dashes)
sprinkle of fresh or dried parsley
4 dashes of onion powder (or minced onion)
4 dashes of Old Bay seasoning
1 egg
1/2 cup bread crumbs
Mix thoroughly, form cakes. Heat skillet to medium, add 1 Tbsp grassfed butter to the pan. Make your cakes!
For the dipping sauce, just mix some chipotle powder and a squeeze of lemon juice into some mayo. Be sure to make the outsides of your crab cakes crispy!
News/Notes: It’s so hot in NY—I love it! We don’t have air conditioning and I don’t care—I just sit in front of the fan and do my work (and the sweat drips anyway). I wore my new Juil grounding flip flops to the yoga class I taught tonight, and I love them (even though I don’t feel especially grounded at the moment). I’m going to write more about them tomorrow, and I also have a post almost done about detoxing (that I promised a while ago). For some reason, I just can’t fit my posts in right now–I have been posting a little on my facebook pages, so if you want to keep up with the info I’m putting out in smaller bits, find me at facebook.com/thrivestyle and facebook.com/fitbodystyle, and leave a comment too—I like the interaction part of facebook!
I’m going to Cali on Friday for TRX training (Sunday). This is a quick trip (I’m taking the overnight flight on Monday to get back home on Tues morning), but it also involves some planning for a longer trip I’m taking there in the fall. I’ll be in Santa Monica for about 6 weeks in the fall–it’s really exciting, and I’m lucky to have the opportunity to do some work there and also to stay with my cousin (on the beach). Honestly, I can’t wait to try out all the great yoga studios, and to drink classic kombucha and green juice (without having to make it myself). Ok, and there are some great restaurants in Santa Monica, plus…it’s on the beach.
Do you have anything new and exciting (for work or fun) to look forward to?
Are you a crab cake lover? Seafood?
I used to love crab cakes, but one time I got sick off of them and just cannot get myself to eat them again.
my family loves them though!
I can appreciate a GOOD crab cake – but am picky… I can tell these are the kind I like! I know there must be a certain amount of binder, but as little ‘filler’ as possible. Mmm.
my accounting work? not exciting 😉 my food writing? I have two fun projects coming up! photography? I sold three photos last month, I was incredibly excited about. that’s all the exciting for me!
Your trip to Santa Monica sounds great – and the fall is a great time to be going, I would think! enjoy your shortie visit this time!
I am not feeling especially grounded either at this point…I need a new week to start things over! I haven’t made crab cakes in over a year. The boys would love it if I would though. I need to make your version for them. It’s on the list! I don’t have a whole lot of excitement going on here right now. Just trying to keep on going. I don’t mind the lack of excitement sometimes though. I need a break though…
SIX WEEKS in santa monica?!! lisa, what an amazing opportunity!! and this weekend will be such fun for you, too. have a super time!!
i am LOVING THIS HEAT, too!! it was like 38 degrees C yesterday…i get super-annoyed by all the complaining i hear…so thank you for embracing the temps.
i am having a great july – the blogcation is good as i can give me creative brain a bit of break, focus on work (it’s been an involved month) and just read and be outside – ahhh!
happy wednesday!
OH I CAN’T WAIT to hear about the TRX training. I think youre gonna love it!
I am a HUGE crabcake fan, and ironically this is the week where our jumbo lump crab (in a large can) goes on sale. I may just have to try these!
I made your crab cake recipe when you first posted it and loved it! I haven’t made it since though and I think I need to change that. I haven’t had crab in a while, but I love it!!
Yum — I’m a total crab cake junkie so this is right up my alley! I’ve been feeling the same way about blogging lately…seems like I’m having trouble finding time to fit in posts! I think I need a break, lol.
