Grow, Learn, and Do

First, enter my giveaway! Vega Shake ‘n Go, SunButter (donated), Dandy Blend, my (almost) famous and (almost) raw granola, and Kimberly Snyder’s new detox book!

Thinking of adding this to my professional repertoire...when people say they'd buy something from you, do you believe them?

Second, check out my Guest Post at Healthy Heyday (and leave a comment for Jody Lynn!)

Third:

We began talking about weight and the overweight/obesity epidemic in my nutrition course, and I was reminded how much I like and care about my students. I’ve also been watching episodes of Secret Millionaire, and somehow these two things have combined in my head to remind me that focusing on helping and educating individual people is more fulfilling than trying to change the world.

Also, If you’re interested in contemplating topics like:

  1. Is it ok for high schools to sell candy to kids during the day to raise money for sports programs?
  2. Should health insurance cover bariatric surgery?
  3. What could the potential health gain be if workplaces took a harder stance on health (there’s this car dealership guy who sends his unhealthy employees to “health camp” and pays for it)?
  4. Is a treadmill walking workspace a good (and effective) idea?

Check out this CNBC special on Hulu: One Nation, Overweight.

Also, watch this season’s first epidsode of Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution. The kids bring in their “School Food” and all of it comes out of a plastic wrapper—much of it has been heated up in the wrappers. I think the second episode is on this week!

I’ve learned:

1. My mom told me about a quote from the college president, “Make new mistakes.” I love this–mistakes are inevitable, so I’d rather just focus on learning my lessons and moving onto new ones! I get tons of new ideas and try things all the time…and many times it doesn’t work out. But sometimes it does.

2. Broccoli has more protein per calorie than steak.

3. If you’re a coffee drinker, take a travel mug to Starbucks on Friday (Earth Day) and get free coffee.

Last thing:

I’d like to do something useful and important for Earth Day. Since I’ve decided not to single-handedly save the world, I’m going to plant some things on my porch (or maybe inside if it keeps snowing and being so cold here in NY).

This year's crop is coming soon!
A great reference!

Last Last thing:

My cousin Kristen, the one co-producing The Killing (you can watch free online),Β spent the weekend in France and she said that in Monaco (1) you could rent a space for your yacht for $350K per week, and (2) when using public (co-ed) restrooms, there is a little machine that comes out and washes and dries the toilet seat before you use it. Β Based on my irrational fear of public toilets, I think I may have to move to Monaco! Do you know anything interesting or quirky about another country?

  1. Heather (Where's the Beach)

I read a quote recently that was along the lines of if you're not making new mistakes, you're not trying something new.

  2. I feel like I have opinions about those topics, but that they might be controversial. I'm totally going to watch the episode.

Definitely going to starbucks on Friday! Free coffee is a good way to start off Earth Day AND Good Friday.

  3. Brava! I have enjoyed everything in this posting. Thank you for sharing so much information.

  4. I love the thoughts you put out there! I think we're a generation of people willing to change things in the world for the better. It's time we start asking ourselves some of those tough questions you pose.

  5. I LOVE jamie oliver!

I studied abroad in Spain for a few months (it was lovely) there stores are closed for lunch (usually from 2-4) and everything besides restaurants are closed on Sundays. It's also rude there to have your hands under the table while you're eating.

  6. I love the fact about broccoli. I've been adding it and peas (also higher in protein) to salads like CRAZY lately! I heard about Earth Day at SBucks too… that's an amazing promotion for them to do and I hope I get a chance to go! Finally, if I could have a treadmill walking workspace, I would be in HEAVEN!!

  7. I love that quote “make new mistakes”!

Jamie Oliver's show is really good — and yes a new episode should be on tonight I think. I've watched part of One Nation, Overweight but I want to watch the whole thing. Sounds like something I'd enjoy.

  8. Loved the quote!!!!!! πŸ˜€
The guest post was awesome, too.
Here, people always take their shoes off before entering a house…..no one wants to dirty the floor, and its almost rude not to take off your shoes!

  9. Can't wait to see what you end up growing Lisa!

P.S. – there's a couple hotels in Atlanta that have those crazy self-washing toilets as well – just in case you didn't want to move sooooo far away =)

  10. what a fun post with all sort of different things! πŸ™‚ I definitely want to check out the CNBC special I am definitely interested in those topics.

Just so you know, I would buy that granola! πŸ™‚

  11. Actually, I totally forgot about the toilets in France that do that. I loved it! Freaked me out at first, but since I HATE germs, I loved that idea. Don't get me wrong, I still hovered over it, but at least they were cleaned. On the subject of candy at school, I don't know, they will get it one way or the other. I guess you just have to teach your kids about moderation.

  12. I need to see that “One Nation, Overweight.” Honestly, I don't think those questions you listed have simple answers unfortunately. Have you seen the health ads in NY? I think they're mostly on the public transportation, but they are meant to open people eyes to sodium and sugar content and how those things are directly related to obesity, etc. I guess that's one thing the government has done that I'm really proud of and in full support of.

  13. haha! that is too funny about the toilets! i would really like that, too!
thank you for sharing “mistakes are inevitable.” so true, yet personally, i find it hard to accept/get over when i make an “oops.” (did an insignificant error at work today, but it still bugged me). and it's true: we always learn from our mistakes, and it's a part of life.
i will have to get a starbucks on friday then – coffeeee! πŸ™‚
in singapore, you can't chew gum…that's the only *interesting* fact i can think of – it's bedtime!

  14. I love your blog. I am learning growing and participating in your WONDERFUL blog. Your questions made me think. For sure!

Thank you for the giveaway cances again I am prayin!

  15. I totally adore Jamie Oliver. Even though he & I don't have the same goals exactly (he's nowhere near vegan! ;)), he seems like a great guy & his cause is such a noble one. I hope he can help exact a lot of MUCH NEEDED change in our country!

That granola is making me drool.

  16. Gina (Candid RD)

So much to talk about on this post!
So, broccoli really has more protein, per calorie, than steak?! That's crazy!! Who knew?!
I would love to debate all of those questions, above, with someone, specifically questions about what kids should be able to bring to school. I recently read an article about a school not allowing their kids to pack a lunch. I thought that was going a little too far!! I'd be so angry if I were a parent. But I do not think it's ok for kids to raise money during school. No way.

  17. Isn't it crazy about broccoli?!

The high school was actually rolling out a cart (employees) and selling

candy and junk (pop tarts, twix, skittles, etc) to the students three times

a day, starting at 9:30am. They are making $400-$500 a week, and the

principle said he thinks there's nothing wrong with it. When asked, he said

he wouldn't want his kids buying it, but he'd teach them not to. Craziness!

If my kids went to a school where they couldn't take their lunch….we'd be

    moving!

  18. Thanks Aubrey! I wish everybody could win the giveaway πŸ™‚ I'll keep my

fingers crossed for you—and if you don't win, I think there will be

    another one early next week!

  19. Ohhhh, it's so hard to let those little mistakes go, isn't it? I'm the same

way. But looking in on someone else's little mistakes—-it's so easy to

see that it's no big deal!

Can't wait for my starbucks…in the name of Earth Day of course πŸ™‚

Hope you got a good night's sleep!

  20. Woooo GO BROCCOLI! With the amount of broc I eat, I probably get more protein than any steak-eater! Your garden is so pretty, I love seeing plants poke their heads out of the ground! I hope you had/are having fun with Matthew, I will send him good karma in the form of healthy food. P.s. if he is here Thursday, Tal Ronnen (the Conscious Cook) is going to be at the Pittsford Wegmans from 11am-7pm. Wanna go?!

  21. Whoop! I didn't know that about broccoli! And I am excited about the Starbucks/earth day coffee deal. We just planted our garden- I hope it grows!!

  22. Beth @ DiningAndDishing
