Giveaway Winner + More Spring Cleansing + Two Great Health Documentaries

Congrats Stefanie for winning my Giveaway!  I’ll be sending out her package on Monday…with the granola, Kimberly Snyder Detox book (I got it today!), Dandy Blend, and the Vega Shake ‘n Go. Sun Butter is donating their organic sun butter, so they’ll send it to Stefanie directly.

If you’re disappointed that you didn’t win, stay tuned!  Next week, I’ll have another giveaway of an exciting treat from a local company (Ithaca, NY). You should also check my facebook page once in a while—I did a spontaneous granola giveaway yesterday that only required a quick comment to enter!

Remember my last hormone post that talked about the link between good sleep and your metabolism? I have another post started about stress and metabolism that I’m just putting the final touches on. Look for it on Saturday!

Last night, I wanted to use the rest of my aloe…

I used the last couple inches of this lovely leaf, sliced off the green parts and threw the gel in the blender

…and I’m so glad I decided to get a little creative.

Aloe + 8 ounces of Unsweetened Almond Milk + Orange Extract + Stevia

Aloe blended with liquid creates FROTH! So aloe blended with milk creates creamy froth!  It also more than doubled the unblended quantity, and there’s a slightly fizzy feel to it as well. I felt like I was drinking an Orange Creamsicle. Yes, I was totally happy about that!

This was awesome...I am thinking about experimenting with folding it into things like avocado pudding to fluff and lighten it a little--I'll let you know what happens 🙂

I’m currently watching a Documentary on Netflix called Food Matters.  Have you seen it? I highly recommend it if you haven’t seen it. I’m debating whether to show it in my nutrition course. I love how it talks about vitamin supplements and the issues with not using food/nutrients as medicine to heal.

“Good health makes a lot of sense, but it doesn’t make a lot of dollars.”

I also just ordered this: Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead.

It’s screening in select cities (not mine), so I ordered the DVD and am really looking forward to seeing it!  Check out the trailer. Here’s what it’s about:

“100 pounds overweight, loaded up on steroids and suffering from a debilitating autoimmune disease, Joe Cross is at the end of his rope and the end of his hope. In the mirror he saw a 310lb man whose gut was bigger than a beach ball and a path laid out before him that wouldn’t end well— with one foot already in the grave, the other wasn’t far behind. FAT, SICK & NEARLY DEAD is an inspiring film that chronicles Joe’s personal mission to regain his health.

With doctors and conventional medicines unable to help long- term, Joe turns to the only option left, the body’s ability to heal itself. He trades in the junk food and hits the road with juicer and generator in tow, vowing only to drink fresh fruit and vegetable juice for the next 60 days. Across 3,000 miles Joe has one goal in mind: To get off his pills and achieve a balanced lifestyle.”

Do you think you could or want to do just produce, smoothies, and juice for 15 days?

Related to this, is the Reboot Your Life Program.  Check it out—anyone want to try it with me? I’m planning to start a week from Sunday (I like to give myself a week to ease into things like this). It’s basically a produce cleanse, and there are three variations to choose from. The Classic is: “This program consists of 5 days of eating, blending and juicing only whole fruits and vegetables; followed by 5 days of just juicing; followed by 5 days of eating, blending and juicing whole fruits and vegetables. Think 5-5-5.”

I’ll be doing the Reboot starting next Sunday, and would love some company!

Have you seen Food Matters? Do you take supplements or use food as medicine? If you do or if you don’t, either way I think you’ll find this documentary interesting!

A quote from the movie: “Two handfuls of cashews give you the therapeutic equivalent of a prescription dose of prozac” …but people are worried about the fat in cashews.

  1. I have not seen either of those movies but I would like to! They both sound really interesting.

The Reboot program sounds great — I won't be participating, but you can consider me your cheerleader!

  2. happy easter weekend, lisa! hope you enjoy a bit of free time!
both those movies sound GREAT! i have not seen “food matters,” but would love to. “fat, sick and nearly dead” – have not even heard of it, but again, would love to – i love docs+health-related topics (seriously, “supersize me” is one of my all-time faves!).
good luck with the reboot program, and please keep us updated!
have never had an aloe drink! way cool!

  3. I love this post. I will have to try the aloe drink it looks great. A couple of weeks ago a had a large aloe in my hand and then didn't get it. Maybe next time. I love the food matter's DVD. You will get a chuckle when you see my next prize. I do take a few supplements from a naturopath and treat my food as medicine. I am really star ting to get into herbs too. I am trying to make every bite count.

  4. I'm so glad you posted this- I have heard of eating aloe for its medicinal/ nutritional value, but was sort of freaked out/ confused by the idea. I'm thinking now it looks pretty tasty! I've heard its good for digestive system. Is that true? Are there other benefits? Can you taste it?

  5. I have had aloe growing in my house for 2 years now…I have so much of it too!!! I originally bought it for my smoothies but I have been afraid to use it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

  6. If you put too much in (1) it tastes a little weird and (2) it could cause

“the draino” effect….but I used about 2-3 inches off the wide end of the

leaf and it is about a half inch thick, and no weird taste or digestive

issues. Aloe tones your digestive tract, so it's really good for digestion

in general, can help prevent acid reflux, and is very soothing. I know some

people use it for constipation and it can be used to help stabilize blood

sugar, but I don't know the details on that. If you just put a tiny bit in a

    smoothie, you'll never know it!

  7. Congrats to the winner! What a prize! I=jealous 😉 That movie sounds really interesting. I usually only take a calcium supplement. I'm taking a couple more now due to the pregnancy and resulting iron deficiency. Usually I use food as medicine whenever possible. That quote is awesome!

  8. OMG I always get that from people commenting on cashews!! It's one of my favorite nuts and people always comment and say – I don't eat that b/c it contains a lot of fat. But, the same people will eat processed meals and snacks and think it's so healthy! Whole foods people! Whole foods!

Rinaldo & I watched Food Matters about 2 months ago and loved it! We passed it on to other family members to watch as well! I'd really consider showing it in your class because they're lots of useful information.

I haven't heard of Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead so thanks for the recommendations. I'll have to watch that soon!

    Have a great weekend!!

  10. Andie @ Canyoustayfordinner

I am dying to see Food Matters! I know I'd love it. Cashews are my favorite nut and I could not agree more that if we ate more real, whole foods, we'd all be better physically and mentally.

  11. We have to watch that movie together when you get it!!! And I am craving an aloe cooler even though I have no idea how it tastes. I just want something refreshing:) Have a lovely Friday girl, text me if you're free at all this weekend!

  12. I haven't seen Food Matters but will ASAP. I watched Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead last week and can't wait to hear what you think of it. I enjoyed it and found it very inspiring. Have a great weekend!

  13. Ah I can't wait to get the package – thanks again!! 🙂

I'm loving all the documentaries that you've been posting about – I think I'm going to download for my long flight next week!! 🙂

  14. I've tried aloe before, but not in a smoothie. I think I'd like it more in a smoothie. I have seen parts of Food Matters. I do take supplements but more for a boost now than as a substitute for foods. I like getting what I need through food way more than a pill!

  15. We did see Food Matters! Great movie that really made me think, particularly about chemotherapy and other conventional treatments (not that I was previously a fan). Sad though as I watched my dad go through chemo unsuccessfully 🙁

I also saw the star of the “Fat Sick and Nearly Dead” DVD on TV talking about his story. It's very inspirational.

hmmm I don't know if I could do the 5-5-5 as I know I couldn't do just juice and I'm running a half marathon soon. I'm going to show it to my husband Nick I think he might be interested 🙂

    Thanks for sharing! 🙂

  16. I haven't seen Food Matters, but I'm looking forward to seeing it based on your review! I love this quote: “Good health makes a lot of sense, but it doesn’t make a lot of dollars.” It's so true. It reminds me of the book In Defense of Food, which basically boils down to: eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.

  17. I'm so glad I found your site! I'll def. be back again!!! 🙂 And you're right! Food Matters really IS a good movie! I watched it several times. I would play it in class if I was you. It can't hurt, right? 😉

  18. I have never thought of adding aloe to a drink, but I love your description! I've been dying to get an aloe plant and now I have another reason. 🙂 Love that quote about the cashews…definitely some serious food for thought!
