I planted microgreen seeds last week, so I wanted to just show you the progression of what has happened.
I’m pretty happy with my first attempt at the indoor garden–and I know I planted too many seeds in each crop, but I was in a rush when I planted and didn’t have enough containers and dirt for the number of seeds I soaked. Later tonight I’m going to harvest my clover (I could figure out what that one was—no clue on the others, but I can probably look it up).
I’ll be planting more–I can’t think of a reason not to, and I just read something about how dirt has something in it that when it gets on your skin, it makes your brain release some chemical that makes you happy. Seriously? Playing in the dirt? Ok, well I’m always in for happiness shortcuts, and I have a good vacuum that will help me suck up all the stray dirt that is scattered around during the process.
On a side note, Joe and I watched Food, Inc. over the weekend. I highly recommend it. Neither of us are eating meat today.
The photos of green and growing say it all. What containers are you using for growing? Special kind of soil? Are there any resources you recommend for growing greens? Are you harvesting and then adding these “greens” to salads and green smoothies? Any hints about what not to do?
Those are just the first questions I have….
I bought plastic growing containers from Lowes…about 3 inches deep. But I realize this was a waste of money because you could use any type of container that you can punch holes in the bottom—-like wegmans take out containers or the containers spinach comes in. I had one little batch in a plastic tub from blue cheese (that Joe bought of course). Anything works—one of the things I did not follow directions on was that not all my containers had holes and drip trays. It seems to be working anyway, but it would be easier if I didn’t have to worry about over watering.
The soil I used was organic potting soil mixed 50/50 with peat moss (that didn’t say organic, but I couldn’t find any other). Ann Wigmore suggests you should sprinkle kelp granules in the dirt too for minerals, but I have not ventured there yet.
I am adding the greens to salads and smoothies and anything else I think of (mostly because I planted waaaaay too much at once)!
I honestly don’t know what I’m doing, and I have a really terrible reputation for gardening (maybe because I never wanted to do it…at all). So I don’t think its easy to mess up. I just soaked the seeds in water overnight and then planted them with about 1/8-1/4 inch dirt covering them. That’s it!

I’m going to post what I made for dinner last night—it was the easiest thing ever, and it was totally delicious!
Thanks for asking all the questions! I’m really excited about all this growing 🙂
How exciting!! They look great! Yes, maybe a bit tightly packed… but that’s no worry really. How do they taste? I need to get seeds and get mine planted… (I think I’m going to have some extra time on my hands next week when I’ll be able to do it.)
(And I can 100% believe that playing in the dirt helps keep you happy!!)
They actually taste really good. I wish I knew which things were what–One or two of them I’m less crazy about and probably would only sprout next time instead of growing into greens. I’ll try and figure it out… I believe it’s the radish, clover, and alfalfa that are the best, but that’s a straight guess!
